If you have a little one like me you know what its like to be constantly putting on and taking off doll clothes. The big thing for BabyBear right now is the changing of the diapers. The problem we keep running into is that she wants to change the diapers on her dolls but could only pretend to as we only had the one diaper that fit. I decided a long time ago that I was going to sew some extra diapers for her to use and finally just recently found the time to get them done. I created this tutorial in case you have the same problem and would like to tackle this very simple project for your own precious little Bear.
You will need the following to get started: Fabric (in any colour of pattern) Velcro (can be found in black or white for $1.25 a package at the Dollar Store) Scissors Sewing Machine Straight Pins Needle Thread (matching color to your fabric choices) Chopstick (optional) BabyDoll Template (You may have to adjust this to suit your doll size but are more than welcome to use this one for personal use if you like) Sock Monkey Template
You will need to start off by printing out your template. If you are going to use your own template...I found the best way was to place your doll in a sitting position on the paper...and using a pencil tentatively mark where the edges of the diaper go...then remove the doll and fill in the lines...once you have cut it out then again place the doll in the center and pull the paper upwards in to a fitted diaper position in order to make sure you have all the edges laid out correctly. I had to fiddle with, draw and re-cut about 5x before I got it right so be patient...trust me it will all come together in the end.
If you are using the template...lay out your fabric as flat as possible and pin the template in place. If you are only using one color of fabric you can feel free to double your fabric up and cut 2 out at a time. Unfortunately if you are like me and using two different fabrics for your one diaper you will need to repeat this process two times...unless you feel brave enough to lay them out together and cut only once.
With your 2 pieces cut out,
lay them with the right sides facing each other, pinned in place and sew a 1/4 inch seam all the way around the outer edge. Make sure to leave 1 inch of space left open as this will be where you pull your fabric through so that the right side is facing out upon completion.
Taking your scissors you will need to snip very small cuts into the 1/4 inch seam all the way around if you choose but definitely in ALL the corners and rounded edges.
Once everything is all sewn up, you will need to take a chopstick (I find that this tool makes this process much easier) and push your fabric outside right. At this point you will need to thread your needle and hand sew your 1 inch hole shut.
Time to add in your Velcro...after cutting your Velcro to size you will need to place one on either inner side of the flaps...and one on either side of the front piece. You can hand sew them on if you find that easier, but myself I like to sew them on with my machine...so I leave that part up to you.
TaDa! You just created your first BabyDoll Diaper...be ready for the request to make many more.
Or even make them for other animals such as Sock Monkey's like BabyBears Rainbow seen here:
Just remember to add in a hole for the tail if you are creating it for an animal with a tail.
